Jasper Brown arrived in Paulding County, Georgia sometime after the death of his father, William Abraham (Abram) Brown in 1896. As I mentioned in the introduction, Jasper was living on a farm owned by Mary Wheeler in the 1900 census. That was four years after the death of his father. We are not sure exactly when Jasper went to Paulding County. One thing that is interesting and that I have found on only in the last two years is that Jasper had cousins in Paulding County from his mother’s uncle’s children were in Paulding County. Whether or not Jasper knew this is questionable, but, I suspect he did know it. While we might want to imagine that Jasper was a strong independent frontiersman that left Elbert County and scouted his way to Paulding County, that more than likely was not the case.
There have been numerous speculations on how Jasper got to Paulding County. One of the speculations that has been accepted is that Jasper arrived in Paulding County by train. One story is that as soon as Jasper was on the platform at the train station he met a stranger, one James Madison “Doll” Hart who offered him a job. The story goes on to say that Jasper immediately feel in love with James Hart’s daughter Effie and that was how Jasper and Effie met.
I cannot discount this story, but based on census records, it would appear that Jasper did not meet James Hart (whom, by the way, I am named after.) Jasper and Effie married on July 15, 1906. That is six years after the 1900 census reports that Jasper was working as a farm laborer on Mary Wheeler’s farm.

Jasper Brown registered for the military on September 12, 1918. His address is listed as: R. 1, Hiram, Georgia. He was 36 years old. I always was told that Jasper’s birth year as 1880 but he put June 15, 1882 on his registration card. His nearest relative on the card is Mar. Effie Brown, R1, Hiram, Georgia.
According to findagrave.com: One prize was for land that was in Paulding County, and son Joshua R Jordan, after he reached his age of maturity, moved to Paulding, and got title to that land lot, which was in the 832nd Georgia Militia District.”
This is how Jasper came to be in Paulding County. He had cousins there on his mother’s side of the family.
There are a number memories I have of my grandfather. One of the most vivid memories of his is this love of roses. He grew roses at his residence with my Aunt. I too love Roses and have grown some myself. He had a horse named Judy. He would occasionally take me to the barn to see Judy. I have a story that I will not write here, for now, about the day he had to give up Judy. He was aging and could no longer take care of her, so he either gave her to someone or sold her. I saw the entire thing of him leading her into the back of the trailer. There is more too it than this, but that is all I will write here.
